La Rocambolesque offers improv classes and workshops in Montreal designed for improvisers of all levels. Called The Incubator, this theatrical improvisation program provides a stimulating and supportive environment where everyone can develop their creativity and spontaneity while having fun. In small groups of up to 12 participants, each workshop ensures personalized guidance with experienced and attentive instructors. Whether you are a complete beginner or a seasoned performer, you will find a group suited to your level and progress at your own pace within our passionate community.
Improv classes for every experience level
Our improv classes are organized by level of experience in order to meet the needs of everyone – from curious newcomers to stage professionals looking to refine their craft. Here are the main profiles our workshops are designed for:
- Beginners – Have you never tried theatrical improvisation, or only a little? Our beginner workshops are designed to gently introduce you to the foundations of improv. No prior experience is required: you will learn to let go, dare to create spontaneous stories, and play with others in a fun and welcoming atmosphere.
- Intermediate – Do you already have some improv experience or have completed our beginner classes? The Apprentice level allows you to go further. These intermediate workshops enrich your creative toolbox by exploring new techniques and developing your comfort on stage. You will learn, for example, how to better use emotions, create varied characters, and refine your storytelling skills in order to push your improvisations further.
- Advanced – This level is aimed at experienced improvisers with significant stage practice. Our Advanced workshops (and the even more in-depth Conservatory level) focus on refining your mastery of performance. You will explore different styles of improvisation, including more daring formats, to expand your range as a performer. Each advanced session encourages creative autonomy and, except in special cases, concludes with a public end-of-session performance—the perfect opportunity to put your learning into practice on stage.
- Performing arts professionals – Even experienced actors and stage artists can benefit from improvisation. If you are a performing arts professional (actor, comedian, director, etc.) seeking new creative challenges, our Conservatory level offers a unique experimentation lab. You will be able to renew your performance style, step out of your comfort zone by exploring innovative improv formats, and expand your skills in interpretation and spontaneous creation alongside other passionate performers. Improvisation is an excellent training ground for keeping your acting fresh, responsive, and inventive—an asset on stage as well as on camera.
The benefits of theatrical improvisation
Beyond the joy of performing, taking improv classes brings many personal and artistic benefits. In our workshops in Montreal, you will notably:
- Build confidence and stage presence – Improv helps overcome shyness and express yourself without fear of judgment. By regularly creating characters and inventing stories on the spot, you will develop confidence that will benefit you both on stage and in everyday life.
- Stimulate your creativity – Every improv exercise invites you to imagine unexpected worlds and situations. You will train your mind to think creatively and react quickly, improving your sense of wit and spontaneity.
- Improve listening and teamwork – Improvisation is a collaborative art. Our workshops teach you to actively listen to your scene partners, accept their ideas (the “Yes, and…” principle), and build coherent scenes together. This practice strengthens your communication skills, empathy, and ability to work as part of a team.
- Release stress and have fun – Above all, improv is about enjoying the act of playing. In a welcoming environment where mistakes are treated as learning opportunities, you can let go of daily stress. Laughing and creating together provides an excellent outlet and immediate sense of well-being. Every session takes place in a positive and joyful atmosphere that encourages both learning and fun.
